Episode 10
The Broken Manager
The shootout was brief but devastating. Thabo returned fire, and Sizwe dove over the sofa to pull Caroline to the floor. When the sirens finally wailed in the distance and Clinton’s men sped away, the room fell into a deathly silence.
Sizwe looked down. His hands were covered in blood. Not his own, but Caroline's. She had been hit in the crossfire.
"No, no, no," he sobbed, pressing his hands against the wound.
"Is this... under control?" she whispered, her voice fading. Those were her last words.
The police arrived in force. This time, there were no masks, no fakeInterrogations, and no Senzo to bail him out. Senzo had vanished the moment the first shot was fired, taking the R3 million with him to Cape Town.
Sizwe was led out of his house in handcuffs. He passed Kyle and Lindiwe, who stood on the lawn. They didn't cry. They didn't move. They simply watched the man they once called father be loaded into the back of a van.
As the van drove away, Sizwe closed his eyes, sitting alone in the dark, just as he had in the very beginning. But this time, there was no letter to read, no rope to untie, and no family to go back to. He had paid his debts, but the interest had cost him his soul.
